Programs (1999-2001)
National Program for Community Integration of Disabled Children Under the supervision of the Education and Social Affairs Ministries, the National Program for Community Integration of Disabled Children aims to ensure disabled children receive special care and training designed to help them become self-sufficient. The program works closely with early childhood centers and policy makers to ensure educational, social, recreational, and health programs are available to disabled children. Through an integrative approach, the program increases public awareness and works on updating and improving legislation, and improving coordination among relevant agencies. National Developmental Screening Program Under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, the National Development Screening Program aims to reduce the incidence and prevalence of childhood disabilities by ensuring the early diagnosis, referral, and treatment of physical and developmental impairments in under-three year old children. The program trains health center workers on prevention-based measures that include educational and awareness training for primary caregivers. National Program for Early Childhood Education and Development Under the supervision of the Social Affairs, Education and Health Ministries, the National Program for Early Childhood Education and Development aims to create a positive social environment to allow children to reach their full social, cognitive, educational, and physical development. The program creates parental awareness campaigns and expands childhood educational services by training pre-school teachers and upgrading material resources. National Mental Health Program Under the supervision of the Health, Social Affairs, and Education Ministries, the Mental Health Program addresses child and family mental health issues through prevention and awareness campaigns that target families, schools, community centers and the media. The Program trains mental health professionals and ensures effective referral networks between community and treatment services as well as adequate child access to services. National Program for Child Protection Under the supervision of the Social Affairs, Education, Labor, and Legislation Ministries, the National Program for Child Protection targets at-risk children, such as child workers, refugee children, juvenile delinquents, and abused children, to reduce the incidence of violence, abuse, child labor, and institutionalization. Elements of the program include the re-integration of at-risk children through educational and vocational training centers, the reduction of institutionalization through the support of extended and foster families, and the training of judiciary and police personnel on children’s rights and handling offenses. The program aims to improve the infrastructure and coordination for relevant institutions and services. National Children’s Literature Program Under the supervision of the Culture and Education Ministries, the Children’s Literature Program aims to improve literacy among Palestinian children and youth through the support of 1500 school libraries throughout Palestine and the establishment of an educational and training resource center for school teachers. National Program for Media in Advocating Children’s Issues Under the supervision of the Ministry of Information, the program creates awareness through the media on child related issues and trains children to produce written, audio, and visual materials that address their needs. National Non-Formal Education Programs for Community Development Under the supervision of the Ministry for Youth and Sports, the program strengthens sporting, recreational, and cultural activities for youth in rural settings. The various activities take place in multifunctional community centers to provide a setting for children to converge. National Program for School dropout reduction Under the supervision of the Education, Youth and Sports, and Social Affairs Ministries, the program aims to reduce school dropout rates and re-integrate children who have left school. In close collaboration with regional youth and community centers, the program helps school dropouts identify career options and support them through vocational and literacy training as well as involving them in local community events to reduce their social isolation. National Children’s Television Programs Under the supervision of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation and in close collaboration with Al-Quds University and other television networks, the program produces Arabic educational and recreational programs tailored directly for Palestinian children. Children participate in research and production units to train them on television production and allow them to present their views. |
